Monopolistic Competition Free Essays
In 1932, Chamberlin and Robinson proposed the model of monopolistic competition. The term was invented by them to express the idea that under certain market situations, each producer is a sort of monopolist ââ¬â but between such monopolists, there exists a perfect competition. This type of market structure is a combination of elements from perfect competition and monopoly competition. Pure competition and pure monopoly rarely exists in the real world; most firms subject to some competition, but not the extent that would exist under pure competition. Even though most firms are faced with a large number of competitors producing highly substitutable products, firms still have the control over the price of their output ââ¬â they can not sell all they want at a fixed price, nor will they lose their sales if they raise the price slightly. Monopolistic competition resembles perfect competition to a large extent, the major exception being that there is a certain amount of product differentiation in this type of market structure. This differentiation may not always be real. All the producers here are monopolists in their own product markets Chamberlinââ¬â¢s theory retains two assumptions of purely competitive market structure: Each firm makes its decisions independently of all others; i.e. each producer assumes that competitorââ¬â¢s price, advertising and so on are invariant with respect to its own actions. Thus, price changed by one firm is assumed not to cause other firms to react by changing their prices. There are a large number of firms in the industry all producing the similar products. The assumption of totally homogeneous product is removed; each firm is supposed to be able to differentiate its product at least to some degree from those of rival firms. Major Characteristics of Monopolistic Competition In real life, we find neither monopoly competition nor perfect competition. The term monopolistic competition is only invented to describe this situation. A monopolistic competitive market is characterized by the following features: 1.Large number of buyers and sellers (each one acting independently) 2.Barriers to Entry and Exit are low 3.Advertising and Media exposures are maximum 4.Product Differentiation is principle weapon (either real or fancied) Large number of buyers and sellers: For monopolistic competition to exist, there must exist a large number (not as large as that in the case of perfect competition) of firms, so that, each one believes that the other firms in the market will ignore its actions. Each independently operating firm in the industry must have a small enough market share so that it believes that its actions will not create any reaction among its competitors. A simple example may clarify the point. Suppose an industry is made up of 101 firms. Now if a particular firm reduces its price by only 10 percent, it sells may rise by, say, 20 percent. Suppose, this firmââ¬â¢s market share increases by 200 units. In other words, it will take away only 200 units of sales from its hundred competitors or 0.2 percent from each. As it would cause a fall in sale of their rivals from 1000 to 998, the competitors are hardly expected to react fervently in this case. Free entry and Exit: in this type of market structure, firms outside the industry do not find it at all difficult to enter the industry. Likewise, firms established in the industry find it fairly easy to exit. However, entry and exit are not totally free as they are in pure competition. Due to the existence of non-identical products, new firms are unlikely to gain immediately the level of consumer acceptance attained by long established firms. Similarly, exit is slightly costlier than that of in pure competition. It is because, if a monopolistically competitive firmà leaves an industry, it suddenly loses the consumerââ¬â¢s acceptance that it had managed to build up over the years. Advertising and Media exposure: In monopolistic market, there is huge non-price competition among the firms. Advertising lies in the heart of such non-price competition. Advertising is supposed to provide meaningful information to the customers ââ¬â even before a product is physically introduced in the market. it is not possible for the customers to know about every product, its physical characteristics, durability or price at every moment of time. Firms believe that, by providing detailed information regarding the product to people, it will be possible to convert latent demand into actual sales. Product Differentiation: To say that products are differentiated, it is meant that the products may be (more or less) good substitutes, but they are not perfect substitutes. Monopolistic product differentiation can be done on the basis of two factors. First, products can be differentiated on the basis of certain characteristics of the product such as exclusive patented features, trademarks and some special types of packages or wrappers. This type of differentiation can be termed as fancied product differentiation. Second, differentiation may be based on the conditions surrounding the sale of the product and after sales service. The product is differentiated if the after sales services rendered by the firm are different from those of other firms in the market. But, real product differentiation takes place when there are differences in product specifications or differences in location of the firm which determines whether the product is available conveniently to the customers. A differentiation strategy attempts to offer products and services that are considered unique or innovative in the industry. If a firm is successful in differentiating its products and services from those of its competitors, it can generate sizeable profits. This is because successful differentiation allows a firm to change premium prices. A firm may differentiateà its products and services in various ways like design (e.g. Mercedes), brand image (e.g. Coca Cola), features (e.g. Cadillac), technology (e.g. Intel microprocessor), customer service (e.g. Hilton Hotels), quality (e.g. Sony) and so on. A differentiation strategy is very effective when differentiation factors are essential for the customers and hard for competitors to imitate. Equilibrium under Monopolistic Competition: Firms: As most of the products have close substitutes, the demand curve for a monopolistic market is considerably elastic; slopes downward from left to right, the marginal cost being equivalent to the marginal revenue. The proposition is based on the assumption that every firm wants to maximize its net revenue. The individual firm under monopolistic competition is faced with downward sloping average revenue curve and the marginal revenue is always less than the average revenue. The degree of differentiation exists; each firmââ¬â¢s product has a unique demand schedule. If such a firm wishes to increase its sales it must either reduce the price or shift the demand curve by some from of sales pressure like advertisement, special service etc. If shifting the demand curve is not practicable, the only way to increase sales would be price reduction.à à Increase of sales by reduction of price reduces the marginal revenue of the firm. But when marginal revenue is grater than the marginal cost, it is profitable to expand production. The total revenue reaches the maximum point at the level of output where the marginal revenue is equal to the marginal cost. The equality between marginal revenue and marginal cost determines the most profitable output and the position of equilibrium for the individual firm under monopolistic competition. This proposition is based on the assumption that every firm tries to maximize its net revenue. Under monopolistic competition, the net revenue which the firm seeks to maximize is, [Price * Output] ââ¬â [Production Cost + selling Cost]. Group Equilibrium: Due to free entry each firm in a monopolistically competitive industry reaches its long-run zero profit equilibrium. When all the firms reach such equilibrium, the whole industry is said to be in equilibrium which is better known as group equilibrium. Conclusion While every producer wants to enjoy profit-maximization in a monopoly market, from the customersââ¬â¢ point of view the perfect competitive market is the most desired one. This paper will also focus on the poems form and the way in which the usage of certain conventions, such as tone, language, syntax (adjectives, adverbs and verbs) and form help to convey the poets message, which suggests that loss can lead to the mastery of the art of losing. The poems title conveys the suggestion that its contents deal with the theme of art, which may be considered an irony; in the sense that as the reader goes through the lines he realizes that the poem is not about art, but about the art of losing. This art, as suggested in the poem, resembles an acquired and accomplished skill that results from the experience of losing insignificant things, which will lead, throughout the experience gained, to an art of losing rather important things in life. The art of losing and the poems form Elizabeth Bishops poem is structured in a way in which one may notice the poets struggle in expressing herself. It seems as she is trying to state something different to what is being expressed. Chief among these conceptions there is a powerful sense of loss. She is able to achieve all this throughout the manipulation of language and form. Even the tone of the poem seems to avoid the real intended argument that the form of the poem tries to put forward (which will be discussed throughout this essay). As mentioned before in the introduction, most of the poem is filled with irony. The first and most important indication of such irony is depicted in the refrain line: the art of losing isnt hard to master (line 1). Throughout this ironic indication it becomes obvious that this poem is not about art, but about the art of losing, which becomes a skill that can only be acquired and accomplished through countless hours of practice. The irony held in the poem becomes evident by revealing that losing is an art. Without a doubt, it is ironic to see how a frustrating and difficult part of life can be considered an art. The tone also changes in each of the stanzas. In the first stanza, Bishop speaks in tones of a rather experienced woman who has gone through situations which lead her to assert that with the intent to be lost [ ] their loss is no disaster (lines 2-3). This, however, resembles the daily loss of keys, and time. Such parallelisms of lost things provide a temporary distraction that repels the reader away from the force built in the poem. Apparently the poet tries to hide her pain caused by the loss of a dear one, thinking that by embracing loss, she can master the art she is longing to obtain, the art of losing. In the second stanza Bishop suggests the reader, throughout the usage of imperatives, to lose something every day and accept the fluster (line 4). Through the usage of imperatives and by sounding dominant, Bishop tells the reader that the art of losing isnt hard to master. The only thing that is left is to accept the fluster of lost door keys, the hour badly spent(lines 4-5). Up to this point it seems as if the poet is trying to provide the reader with a guide devoted to the mastering of art losing. Suggesting that by following her simple advices, the reader can, too, achieve such art. It seems as if Bishop is trying to put forward the philosophical reflection of the first stanza throughout imperatives and a second person speaker. The third stanza intensifies the intention of the previous stanza in being developed as a command with a simple shift to then(line 7). Bishop puts forward an increasingly dynamic agenda devoted to loss, she commands the reader to practice losing farther, losing faster(line 7), but now she is not losing simple things. Bishop goes from losing simple things to losing places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel (line 8). It appears as if she is simply shifting the tone to a confessional one, since it has become evident, up to here, that Bishop is the one who speaks, which will become evident in the following stanza, she addresses the reader and shares her own experiences. Throughout the poem, the changes in tone and speaker bestow the poets efforts to cover up her true feelings. She goes from denying the importance of losing significant, but rather essential things, to the loss of personal belongings. The usage of colloquial language intensifies the poems emotional power that has been hidden until now. The rhyme scheme Bishop employs and the usage of the villanelle appeal to put forward the intention and message of the poem, apart from lessening the seriousness of Bishops true feelings. The poem in the fourth and fifth stanzas gains intensity, since the poet refers to the loss of properties, and places.

All network hardware devices need to have security functions which would prevent unauthorised access to systems and data and helps stop viruses malicious software from accessing the network. Network hardware devices include: Workstations Modems Routers Wireless Routers/WEP (Wireless Access points) Each network hardware device comes with its own security features. Workstation Workstations rely greatly on software to protect them from network threats. Anti-virus software programs help keep workstations safe and a software firewall is deployed to keep ports closed even if a program tries to open them. Keeping ports from being opened is like keeping a door closed; nothing can go in or out. This reduces the threat from unauthorised access. Routers To access the security settings of a router, a username and password is needed. If this is not configured anyone who gains access will be able to administer the network as if it was owned by them. This is set buy the administrator or the ISP. Wireless Routers/WAP (Wireless Access point) Wireless routers are more venerable to unauthorised access. This is because the LAN (Local Area Network) does not need to be accessed physically. If the wireless functions of a router are not configured properly, the network can be accessed and configured in administrative mode by anyone. This is a serious security risk. The wireless access can be controlled by configuring an encrypted password, setting a SSID (Service Set identifier) and choosing whether it is visible or not. If it is not visible, people will not be able to search for the access point; they will have to know the SSID before hand. For password encryption WEP and WPA can be used. WPA is more secure than WEP. Doing this stops unauthorised users from accessing the network. M2 Configure a networked device or specialist software to improve the security of the network. I have been asked to implement security to the plan below. This is the network security set-up of a bank. I have been given the task of creating a detailed diagram coupled with a full write-up including any evidence of how the network security has been improved. I will analyse the potential risks of each asset in this network to find out what types of threats the business may face and what can be done to defend or prevent these threats. Mainframe with customer accounts Customers are able to log directly onto the extranet using their personal details. This means that they are essentially giving away their personal, confidential information. Although an extranet is a private network it uses the internet for its external access feature. When sending information across the internet without the right protection, information could be intercepted and taken for later use. Information can even be altered at the time of sending for example a hacker might change the address that a customer wants to send money to in order to commit fraud. This is called the man-in-the-middle attack. If the website does not use encryption, people may start attempting to target the sites vulnerabilities. Depending on how popular the service is the likelihood of an attack can vary. The can be easily prevented by using a secure HTTPS connection on the website when dealing with personal and private information. This will also prevent the man-in-the-middle attack as time-stamps are used. This means if information transfer has been delayed, it may be altered so it is ignored. The network set-up can be made more secure by adding a dedicated firewall in between the extranet and the external customers. Although a firewall has already been installed, alternative routes can be taken to avoid the firewall. An example of when this will happen is when the connection is cut between the firewall and extranet, an alternative route may be taken when accessing customer details. Internal Bank Systems and All other bank data Because there is not firewall installed between the internet and extranet, malware and/or spyware may make it through the network, through the Internal Bank Systems and into the server that holds all the other bank data. This data can range from customer accounts to the banks future strategies and projects. This makes the bank venerable to hackers and even competitors as this information can be used for fraud and blackmail or it can be taken secretly by another bank to give the competitor an extra edge in the market. If the internal bank systems are taken over externally, money transferred illegally and records deleted, this would cause a huge problem for the banks as well as all of its customers and employees. Although it is not likely that other banks will hire hackers to attack the network, it is common for hackers to try to find information or ruin a banks system. This is popular and is also often seen in films. This can be prevented by installing anti-malware/spyware software on the server and installing a dedicated, properly configured firewall between the extranet and internet. External Access via Customers Advice can be given to customers to prevent Phishing and other threats. If the customer is knowledgeable in this area they will notice that it is a risk. This can be stopped by informing the customers that they should only go directly to the site before logging in and not to follow email based links. Firewall Its all good having lots of firewalls installed on the network blocking every possible entrance but if they are not configured correctly they may let in experienced hackers. In some cases the user cannot access the internet with a program they use often and so they open a bunch of ports on the firewall so they can access the internet. This is unprofessional and doing this greatly increases the risk of unauthorised access the network. A network administrator should be contacted in this type of situation to open the port needed and minimised network traffic. If unnecessary ports are open the bank will be extremely venerable to a Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDoS). This type of attack in often aimed towards commercial websites that sell/provide goods and/or services. This attack involves a computer sending a virus to a large number of other computers. The virus will have a trigger. When this trigger is set off (by time or by another computer,) all of the computers infected will flood the victim server(s) with network traffic in order to shut down the server and their service. Here is a diagram that shows how this process takes place. If the server was turned off for even 5-10 minutes a vast amount of customers would complain. This bank may be targeted because if it is popular and well known. This type of attack can also be prevented by using a dedicated firewall that examines network ports to determine whether it is from a reliable or safe source. If it is a malicious packet it is dropped immediately. After receiving a packet it will send in on to the main server only if the packet is safe. Wireless Access point with WEP Wireless routers are more venerable to unauthorised access. This is because the LAN (Local Area Network) does not need to be accessed physically. This is done by using an encryption algorithm called Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). As this security measure has become used more, it has been examined by hackers and now had been cracked. For this reason the newer, more secure security method should be used; Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2) If the wireless functions of a router are not configured properly, the network can be accessed and even configured in administrative mode by anyone. This is a serious security risk. The administrator needs to set an admin password and username in order to prevent this. I have produced an improved network diagram using the countermeasures mentioned above. This new network had improved the network security in every aspect above. I have done this by configuring all devices, installing security software on relevant devices and installing two extra firewalls. M3 Explain the similarities and differences between securing a wireless and wired network system. Wired and wireless networks are very similar in a logical diagram but physically can be very different. Wireless networks can go further than a wire, for example they can go through walls and building floors. Because of this wireless and wired network security is very different is some ways. Physical security Securing a traditional wired network, physical aspects of the network have to be looked at. For example servers have to be located in secure rooms with locked doors and wires have to be protected using wire covers. Below are examples of the kind of products that professional networks will have installed. Wire networks also need physical security but they can still be accessed wirelessly, because of this a password has to be used to restrict unauthorised access. This can be implemented using Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or the more secure Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2). The network SSID (Service Set identifier) can be configured to an unsearchable setting. This prevents people even knowing that the wireless network exists. The SSID would have to be known in order to connect to the network in this case. Speed One of the main disadvantages to wireless networking is the reduced speed. Wireless Ethernet is either 11Mbps (802.11b) or 54Mbps (802.11a) or 160 Mbps (802.11n) whereas Wired Ethernet is can be from 100Mbps to 1Gbps (1000Mbps) or more! Performance Although the speed of wireless has been greatly increased due to the introduction of 802.11n, it still cannot keep up with the demand for bandwidth in networks today. With wired Ethernet 1Gbps can handle the large bandwidth demand and provide a good service to all users on the same network. Symbolism of White and Green in The Great Gatsby :: essays research papers
The Great Gatsby is full of symbolism, colors, for example. Throughout the book the author uses them to represent different themes of the novel. Some of these colors are white, yellow, grey, green, pink, red and blue. However, I picked white and green for my commentary because I think these colors have a special meaning different from the others. White is mainly used to describe the characterââ¬â¢s innocence, fakeness, and corruption. While green represents Gatsbyââ¬â¢s hopes, ambitions, and dreams. In addition, sometimes green symbolizes the jealousy of certain characters. The color white appeared many times throughout the book. It is used in the first chapter by Nick when he sees Daisy and Jordan in East Egg. ââ¬Å"They were both in white and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house.â⬠(Pg. 8) In this passage, white is used to describe Daisyââ¬â¢s and Jordanââ¬â¢s innocence and purity. However, in page 24 the real characteristics of Daisy are revealed, ââ¬Å"Our white girlhood was passed together there our beautiful whiteâ⬠, this tells us that when Daisy was younger she was innocent, but now she has changed. In page 116, the author talks about Jordan: ââ¬Å"Jordanââ¬â¢s fingers, powdered white over their tan, rested for a moment in mine.â⬠This symbolizes fakeness, it tells us that Jordan is a superficial woman just like Daisy. They try to pretend to be something that they are not, just because they want to fit into the high society. Fitzgerald also refers to the steps to Gatsbyââ¬â¢s house as being white. Even the windows at Daisyââ¬â¢s house are white. ââ¬Å"The windows were ajar and gleaming white.â⬠(Pg.13) this tells us that Daisy and Gatsby look innocent from the outside but not from the inside, instead they are corrupted people. This thought is also expressed when Gatsby takes Nick for a ride in his car. When he is stopped by a policeman, Gatsby shows the officer a white card, which symbolizes corruption. When the commissioner sees this, he lets Gatsby go. Nick thought it was a Christmas card sent to him by the officer, but later on we learn that Gatsby had bribed the police officer. White might also be related to Tom, who is a racist man. He is very concerned about a book he read called ââ¬Å"The Rise of the Coloured Empireâ⬠.

Bilingual Education Essay Bilingual Education isnââ¬â¢t an issue thatââ¬â¢s been short lived. The programs have existed as far back as the late eighteenth century; Immigrant students were then instructed in their first language. Ohio became the first state to adopt an actual bilingual education state legislation in 1839. Other states soon followed, although the variation in language was somewhat broader (Lipka n.p). Controversy has been constant over what methods are actually effective, and what methods need to be retired. Since we are a nation that doesnââ¬â¢t have a national language and requires every child to obtain an education, the responsibility to provide one, becomes ours. With more and more immigrants coming from Mexico, the need for a successful bilingual education method is exploding. Educating any student in a language foreign to their own seems ridiculously absurd. One that doesnââ¬â¢t understand the language well canââ¬â¢t obtain anything taught in the foreign language. Although many approaches of bilingual education are used throughout the United States, they all vary in theory and in teaching style. The students have to be thoroughly taught English before joining an English speaking classroom making Immersion the most successful method. During the Civil Rights movement in the 1960ââ¬â¢s, bilingual education became an issue, making legislation necessary to help resolve the problem that had been affecting students and families so harshly (Lipka n.p). ââ¬Å"In January 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Bilingual Education Act, which incorporated native-language instruction into the curriculum (Lipka).â⬠Although the Bilingual Education Act was signed, the discrimination didnââ¬â¢t stop. A few years it was found in the court case Lau vs. San Francisco School District that the Bilingual Education Act wasnââ¬â¢t being carried out in their school. The law suit represented 1,800 other students; eight-year-old Kenny Lau sued the San Francisco School District over English-only instruction in a school where most students spoke only Chinese. These students couldnââ¬â¢t learn in the English, because none of the students understood English. ââ¬Å"The Supreme Court ruled that schools without special provisions to education language-minority students are not providing equal education and violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Federal government publishes new materials in nearly seventy languages and allocates sixty-eight million dollars for bilingual educationâ⬠(PBS n.p). After the Supreme Court hearing things still werenââ¬â¢t better for minority speaking students. Help was needed then, and remains the same today. There are many different methods that educators choose to use in their classrooms, although some are controversial. ââ¬Å"The bilingual programs of today are mostly a product of the Bilingual Education Act (Title VII) passed in 1968â⬠(ECS n.p). Some states have mandated laws that enforce a strict bilingual program that is taught in all public schools in their state, while others arenââ¬â¢t as strict. Some states need the programs more than others. According to ProEnglish, ââ¬Å"15 states account for 94% of students who speak languages other than English in their home.â⬠Therefore, we know that in these fifteen states we must teach English efficiently. These students all speak a native language in their homes, so on the contrary to some beliefs, these students are not easily going to pick up on a native language. Today we know more about educating students of a minority language then we did in the past, but we are still struggling with it today. Some people even believe we should completely throw bilingual education out. If that happens, there wouldnââ¬â¢t be opportunity for those native speaking students. We would have much larger number of non-English speaking Americans, and a lot more citizens that couldnââ¬â¢t find jobs. Lastly, it would be breaking the Civil Rights Laws. There are countless misconceptions about bilingual education. Some even believe that itââ¬â¢s simply a lost cause, but statistics show other wise. ââ¬Å"In 1990, only three percent of U.S. residents reported speaking English less than well or very well. Only eight-tenths of one percent spoke no English at all (Crawford n.p)â⬠. There are many effective methods to teaching these students. Some argue that if taught the native language, it canââ¬â¢t be transferred to the one learned, while this may be difficult for some, it is possible (Crawford n.p). Students would have an easier time transferring their knowledge from their native language opposed to being taught in a language that isnââ¬â¢t understandable at all. Critics complain about the tax dollars we spend to teach these non-English speaking students, but they also complain about all the minorities that have to live on welfare. Maybe if they were better educated it wouldnââ¬â¢t be quite the case. Critics also believe that bilingual education programs arenââ¬â¢t promoting English, but merely teaching students only in their native language. Most every program in the United States promotes the teaching of English in one form or another. Although, they are not trying to remove ones culture and linguistic heritages, they are just preparing them for success in the public school systems and in the English speaking nation we live in. ââ¬Å"According to one study, school districts reported that 28% of limited English proficiency (LEP) elementary school students receive no native-language instruction. Among those who do, about a third receive more than 75% of their instruction in English; a third receive from 40 to 75% in English; and one third of these receive less than 40% in English (Crawford n.p). Hispanic dropouts continue to remain high. There is multiple factors associated with these statistics, such as; family poverty, English proficiency, some simply never even enrolls in school (NCES n.p). ââ¬Å"In 2005, more than one-fifth (22.4 percent) of Hispanics 16 through 24 years of age were dropouts, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES n.p)â⬠. The Hispanic dropout rate can be lowered with good bilingual education plans for teaching those who canââ¬â¢t speak English. The rate is especially high in Mexican immigrants. ââ¬Å"In fact, the status dropout rate of 44.2 percent for Hispanic 16- through 24-year-olds born outside the 50 states and/or the District of Columbia was more than double the rate of 16.1 percent for Hispanic youths born in the United States (NCES n.p)â⬠. These individuals donââ¬â¢t have the education that is necessary to succeed in the United States, which is not fair according to Civil Rights laws. There are multiple causes for the high dropout rate, but their understanding of the language is a leading cause. So, to be equal to all students, we must provide the same opportunity to native-speaking students. Methods are plentiful to educating students whom donââ¬â¢t speak the dominant language, but most generally only a few methods are currently used in public schools in the United States. First, the submersion method, in a submersion program the native speaking student is placed in the classroom right along with the English speaking students (Queen n.p). Students are expected to learn what the other students are being taught even though they may not fully understand the language. You could basically consider this method a ââ¬Å"sink or swimâ⬠type of education. It sounds absurd for one to expect another to learn something in a language they cannot even decipher. This method may not be considered Bilingual Education to some because only one language is being used. Even if this is the case, students are still being educated in a language unfamiliar to them. Students cannot understand something they arenââ¬â¢t familiar with. If they seem they are picking up on the language conversationally, they still may not register thoughts in English to actually learn material that is being taught in the classrooms. This method will not work for most students; native speaking students will continue to fall behind. Eventually students wonââ¬â¢t be able to catch up with other students their age. Submersion is therefore, no one way for a student to learn anything. Students that fall behind could potentially add to the high statistics in the high dropout rates. Many schools today have English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, such as the Scott County School district uses today. This is when a non-English speaking student is placed in English speaking classrooms for part of their classes, while for others they go to an ESL classroom. When in the ESL classroom they concentrate on learning English to succeed in their English speaking classes. This method can be very effective if the studentââ¬â¢s participate, but if they fall behind there is going to be many hardships catching up. Some students will never catch up to their age group in school and wonââ¬â¢t finish their education (Queen n.p). Students in ESL programs arenââ¬â¢t given enough time to learn the language well enough to succeed; therefore the time they spend in English speaking classrooms could be considered useless to some. If theyââ¬â¢re not understanding of the language, this seems like a waste of the studentââ¬â¢s time. It can also be an imposition to the English speaking students in the classroom. Special time and attention would have to be given to these native-speaking students. That time would then take away from the English-speaking studentââ¬â¢s education. Students arenââ¬â¢t actually taking in anything theyââ¬â¢re learning, other than picking up on a few English words, then this is a waste of time to not only the teachers that arenââ¬â¢t qualified to teach them, but to the English speaking students in the classroom as well. Minority students must receive intensive instruction, since the drop out rate of non-English speaking students in the public system is so high, measures must be drastic. ââ¬Å"The General Accounting Office reported in February 2001 that out of 70 studies reviewed; only three focused specifically on how long it took students to attain English proficiency. General estimates ranged from four to eight years (ECS n.p).â⬠Therefore we know that learning a foreign language enough to learn isnââ¬â¢t easily done and it isnââ¬â¢t necessarily a speedy process. We have to give intensive instruction, and we must not give up on these students. This method isnââ¬â¢t effective enough though, it takes years to learn English in ESL programs as researchers have found. Being as this method takes so long, there is not time for students to keep up with their classes. Many students will not succeed, and will never accomplish what is required to graduate high school. One of the biggest controversies schools and state legislators are facing is the argument with immersion versus Bilingual Education. The ESL method is used a frequently in the U.S, but many ESL supporters are starting to follow the new immersion trend, because it doesnââ¬â¢t take students as much time to learn English. Immersion method of teaching students are intensively taught English for a period of time, for example one school year. After they have learned English well enough to understand, and to actually have the chance to learn English. They are placed back again in English speaking classes and thatââ¬â¢s where they will continue their education. Immersion can stop students from dropping-out and falling behind. Critics argue this is just a loss of time, but with ESL they are in the long run loosing even more time. ââ¬Å"At a leadership meeting a participant decided to speak up, she was an ESL teacher. She said, Research shows that it takes five to seven years for a student to master English well enough to succeed in a mainstream classroom, she said, adding that this finding was only for children who were already proficient in their first language. For kids without good language skills of any kind, it takes 10 years, said the teacherâ⬠(Triangle Business Journal N.P). Students that donââ¬â¢t speak well enough English get thrown into English speaking classrooms that they are not ready to be. Upon this happening students continue to fall behind and could be accounted for such high dropout rates in native speaking students, especially in the Hispanic students. Native-speaking students will have a hard time understanding material in English when you present it before they truly understand enough but, if you make sure they understand the English first, teaching them in English is going to be much more effective and that should be a given. Bilingual Education will be effective in different ways for all different students. Any language students learn differently, some like more visual aide, while others like lots of verbal explanation. That being said, there is no difference in teaching students of another language. Every student has similar basic needs, therefore there should be a basic method used everywhere. We canââ¬â¢t expect these students to sink or swim; a good method must be used. Since most of these students donââ¬â¢t have any sort of an English background at home, then educators canââ¬â¢t expect them to receive any help from the home. So, all the English has to come from the school. Since every student is going to learn at their own pace, we must teach them extensively, without doing so understanding English will not come quick enough. Teaching them English isnââ¬â¢t taking them away from any of their native culture; itââ¬â¢s preparing them for success in the United States. Preparing students for success in English educators will be abiding the civil rights law, and offering each student the same education. If parents donââ¬â¢t want their child speaking two languages or learning English, they should take their child to a private school that will only teach their child in their native language. Although, most native-speaking parents want their children to be fluent in English as well as the language they speak at home. There are also so many advantages to being bilingual today. When traveling foreign countries one could commute with others. It also leads to exposure to both cultures, and one will become more culturally diverse. If one wanted to move to another for another country for any different reason they would have an easier time adjusting. The United States today there are many different language being spoke all over, all the time. Employers look for multi-lingual speaking employees so that they can meet everyoneââ¬â¢s needs. Places such as the hospital, multi-language speaking employees are essential, because not only do English speaking patients come in, as well a lot of other native-speaking patients. Scott City and surrounding areas there are a lot of Spanish speaking people, whom need the same things English speaking people do. Therefore, offering one who is bilingual on the job is going to help tremendously. Since the United States has no official language, I suppose we canââ¬â¢t expect everyone to speak English. According to ProEnglish, over 30 states have adopted English as their official language. Some federal legislation implicitly standardizes English (Wikipedia n.p). Knowing English could almost be considered essential to survive and succeed in this English speaking country. ââ¬Å"According to the 2000 census, the United states has 215 million that are speaking English. While only 28 million speak Spanish, and next a Chinese language who has about two million speaking in the United States (Wikipedia n.p). This should be enough proof to any educator or legislator that knowing English is essential. If one is bilingual in English and Spanish, then even better. English is most essential to be successful in the United States. There are endless reasons that knowing English in the United States that would be essential to anyone. The United States is the ââ¬Å"land of the freeâ⬠, so there is not law stating one must speak the most commonly spoken language: English. To be exact about ninety-six percent of Americans speak English (Wikipedia n.p). To be successful, one will want to understand the language. Most colleges in the United States are all taught in English, although you could go to a school speaking your language, the majority will be teaching in English. Students that want to succeed and go to state colleges theyââ¬â¢re going to need to understand English. The opportunity is available for all students, but some might have it harder with the different method thatââ¬â¢s used in schools across the United States. All methods can work in teaching students; some are just more successful than others. We must educate these native-speaking students so that they have the equal opportunity that English-speaking students do. The need for bilingual education is astronomical; itââ¬â¢s simply whatââ¬â¢s right. Students need to learn English to have the same opportunity for success as others. Some might even have more opportunity once they are fluent in more than one language. The point is we need a good program that works efficiently to educate every native-speaking student in the United States. All the methods have their perks, but we need the most effective and efficient program to teach these minority students. The submersion method doesnââ¬â¢t help any student that is struggling with English, they simply sink or swim. The method might be cheaper, but it will not help any student with the need for Bilingual Education. The only advantage some consider is budgeting. The English as a Second Language program defiantly is a step-up from the Submersion program, but it shows many weaknesses as well. The program wastes time with students in English-speaking classrooms, that donââ¬â¢t even understand the language. Although they are being taught English, and have an instructor also teaching in their native language, the teaching of English, simply isnââ¬â¢t intense enough. Thatââ¬â¢s why Immersion is the best way to educate these minority students that cannot speak English, although they may loose a year of education, they are not going to fall behind anymore than that. When they finish the program, they will be able to understand and speak English. When they are put into English-speaking classrooms they will understand everything being taught. This is what we need for these native students to keep up with the English speaking students. This will minimize minoritiesââ¬â¢ falling behind; dropout rates, and maximizes English understanding. Immersion is the best way to teach these students, and will in turn help these students succeed to fullest of their potential. Immersion makes Bilingual Education is faster and more successful. When structured English immersion plans were used in California, ââ¬Å"after two years of instruction, students made significant gains in reading and writing in English as well as math, relative to studentsââ¬â¢ nationwide taking the Stanford 9, most of whom are native English speakers (NCPA n.p)â⬠.
